Kathmandu, July 8: In a major boost to Nepal’s digital transformation, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited (SCBNL), has committed US$29 million to WorldLink Communications Limited and its subsidiary, Data World Limited.
The investment, backed by the International Development Association’s Private Sector Window, aims to expand Nepal’s fiber-optic networks and establish cutting-edge data centers across the country.
The initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide by enhancing access to high-speed internet and building modern infrastructure. This includes expanding robust fiber networks to connect remote and underserved regions and addressing the increasing demand for data storage and processing capabilities.
“At WorldLink, we believe that connectivity is the bridge to opportunity,” said Dileep Agrawal, Founder and Chairman of WorldLink Communications Ltd. “This strategic partnership with IFC and SCBNL will significantly strengthen that bridge across Nepal. It is a testament to our shared commitment to building a digitally empowered society and a cornerstone for a thriving future for all Nepalis.”
Data centers are expected to become a crucial component of Nepal’s economic development as the country’s reliance on digital technologies grows. As part of the investment, WorldLink and Data World will develop a series of state-of-the-art facilities, including Nepal’s first EDGE-certified data center, setting new benchmarks for innovation and sustainability.
“This investment aligns with the Government of Nepal’s vision under the 16th National Plan and the Digital Nepal Framework to achieve universal internet access and leverage technology for socio-economic progress,” said Imad N. Fakhoury, IFC’s Regional Director for South Asia. “By enhancing digital access in underserved areas and creating quality jobs, IFC is proud to support Nepal’s digital transformation and economic growth.”
The project will also promote sustainability by incorporating environmentally friendly technologies in the data centers and deploying resilient fiber-to-the-home solutions. Moreover, with IFC’s support, WorldLink aims to increase women’s participation in the digital workforce, reinforcing global goals for inclusive and equitable employment.
“Nepal’s digital sector holds immense potential for innovation and growth,” said Vikram Kumar, IFC’s Director for Infrastructure and Natural Resources in Asia and the Pacific. “Unlocking the economic benefits of digital technologies requires greater access, especially in rural areas. Data center infrastructure will be key to this transformation, enabling inclusive development and digital services for all.”
Gorakh Rana, CEO and Head of Coverage at SCBNL, called the partnership a landmark step. “This collaboration between WorldLink, Data World, IFC, and SCBNL is a significant move toward strengthening Nepal’s digital infrastructure. By financing broadband and data center capabilities, we aim to expand access to global opportunities and drive national progress.”
