Birgunj tax office surpasses revenue target by 109%, collects Rs 9.45 billion

Birgunj: Internal Revenue Office in Birgunj has reported a remarkable revenue collection of Rs 9.45 billion in the last fiscal year, significantly surpassing its target and marking a 35.57 percent increase compared to the previous year.

According to Chief Tax Officer Tikaraj Chaulagai, the office outperformed its assigned target of Rs 8.71 billion for fiscal year 2024/25, achieving 109 percent of the annual goal.

“We’ve not only exceeded the target but also secured a ‘One Plus’ performance level based on departmental benchmarks,” he stated.

In contrast, during fiscal year 2023/24, the office had collected just Rs 6.87 billion against a target of Rs 9.41 billion, achieving only 72.93 percent of the goal.

Officials attribute this year’s success to intensified tax recovery efforts and stricter enforcement measures.

“We took decisive action in Chaitra by freezing the bank accounts, properties, and trade operations of non-compliant taxpayers,” said Chaulagai. “Such measures significantly boosted collections.”

The office also expanded market surveillance and launched awareness campaigns on taxpayer education, both of which contributed to the revenue surge.

Breakdown by Tax Categories:

Excise Duty: Target — Rs 3.09 billion; Collected — Rs 4.13 billion

Income Tax: Target — Rs 2.89 billion; Collected — Rs 3.10 billion

Value Added Tax (VAT): Target — Rs 2.58 billion; Collected — Rs 2.12 billion

While the office exceeded its targets in excise duty and income tax, it fell short on VAT collections.

Chaulagai explained that 15 large businesses in the area crossed the threshold for VAT liability and were transferred to central and regional tax offices, which affected local VAT revenue.
