BYD’s new model Sealion 7 launched in Nepal

Kathmandu : The global electric vehicle giant BYD (Build Your Dreams) has launched its much-anticipated model, the Sealion 7, in Nepal.

The launch event held in Kathmandu on Thursday was a major milestone not only for the brand but also for Nepal’s growing transition to clean energy transportation, said Sahil Shrestha, CEO of Cimex Inc., the sole authorized distributor of BYD in Nepal.

Shrestha announced that it’s not just the introduction of a new car, it’s a bold step into the future. He said that Sealion 7 reflects a fusion of innovation, sustainability, and performance and is an icon in Nepal’s electric mobility journey.

Nepal’s exceptional progress in electric vehicle adoption is exhibited by the fact that between 2022 and 2025, more than 50 new vehicle models were introduced in the country, and about 90 percent of them were new energy vehicles.

In just three years, the share of electric vehicles in total vehicle registrations surged from 7 percent in 2022 to an astounding 70 percent in 2025.

Nepal now ranks second globally in terms of EV adoption rate. “One of Nepal’s nationally determined contributions was to achieve 25 percent EV registration by 2025. We are now at 70 percent. This is one of those rare moments where we have overachieved a national goal,” Shrestha said.

BYD’s global journey began in 1995 as a battery manufacturer. The company built its first car in 2005. Just days before the Sealion 7’s launch, BYD celebrated the delivery of its 13 millionth vehicle.

The company currently operates in over 100 countries, maintains more than 40 branch offices, and employs close to one million people. Interestingly, one out of every seven mobile phone batteries in the world is manufactured by BYD.

In 2024 alone, the company sold 4.27 million vehicles, taking its total cumulative sales to 13 million units. With over 122,000 research and development staff, 11 research institutes, and more than 45 patents filed daily, BYD is one of the most innovative and fastest-growing automobile companies in the world.

In Nepal, BYD entered the market in 2011 with solar energy products. Its journey into the passenger vehicle segment began in 2016 with the launch of the first-generation BYD E6.

Since then, the company has introduced several models, including the second-generation E6, Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, and M6.

As of 2025, BYD has approximately 7,000 vehicles running on Nepali roads. These vehicles are supported by a growing ecosystem of 17 showrooms, 11 service centres, and more than 55 charging stations across the country.

“BYD vehicles in Nepal have helped reduce over 26,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. This is not just about selling cars—it’s about creating a smarter, cleaner future,” Shrestha said.

The newly launched Sealion 7 is part of BYD’s “Ocean Series” and is inspired by the power and elegance of the sea. The vehicle’s design, led by BYD’s global chief designer Wolfgang Egger, embodies the philosophy: “Elegance is not about being noticed—it’s about being remembered.”

With its sleek body, starlight motion headlamps, and horizontal waterdrop tail lamps, the Sealion 7 aims to blend sophistication with aerodynamics.

The interior of the Sealion 7 showcases 80 percent soft-touch vegan and Nappa leather materials. It features ventilated, heated, and massaging seats, a panoramic sunroof that covers 2.1 square meters, a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen equipped with voice control, and a 128-color ambient lighting system that synchronizes with music.

Shrestha described the Sealion 7 as not just a car but a force of innovation, power, and precision.

From a performance standpoint, the Sealion 7 comes with a 71.8 kWh battery offering a certified range of 444 kilometers. Thanks to its 800-volt charging architecture, the vehicle can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in just 22 minutes.

Its motor delivers 100 kW of power, 380 Nm of torque, and operates at a speed of 23,000 RPM—claimed to be the highest among mass-produced electric vehicle motors. It also features an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), driver fatigue monitoring, head-up display, and a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Furthermore, it includes an LFP battery for the low-voltage system, making BYD the first manufacturer in the world to implement this safety feature.
