Kathmandu: Government of Nepal has officially extended the validity period of driving licenses from 5 years to 10 years.
This significant change comes through an amendment to the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 1993, which governs the issuance and renewal of driving licenses in the country.
The amendment, published in the Nepal Gazette, brings modifications to the existing provisions under the act, particularly relating to the validity period of driving permits. Previously, licenses were valid for only five years, as outlined in Subsection 3 of Section 54 of the Act.
Under the new provision, all new driving licenses issued henceforth, as well as those renewed in the future, will now carry a validity of ten years. This move is expected to reduce the administrative burden on both citizens and transport authorities and improve efficiency in license management.
The government has also indicated that the amendment includes a provision to allow private entities to operate vehicle testing and pollution control centres. This signals a shift toward greater private sector involvement in road transport services and infrastructure.
The extension of license validity is being welcomed as a citizen-friendly initiative, likely to benefit millions of drivers across the country by reducing the frequency of renewals while encouraging better compliance and record-keeping.
