Kathmandu: Nepal’s city car segment is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by rising fuel prices, increasing traffic congestion, and demand for compact, cost-effective, and energy-efficient vehicles. Once overlooked, small hatchbacks and city electric vehicles (EVs) have now become one of the most competitive segments in the Nepali automobile market.
Industry insiders, including Shyam Sapkota, Managing Director of S-Cube Enterprises, confirm a sharp rise in competition among city cars in the past year. “Previously, city cars were not taken seriously in Nepal, but we’ve seen a surge in brands introducing compact EVs and hatchbacks in response to growing demand,” Sapkota said. Both NADA Auto Show 2025 and NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo 2025, being held at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, are expected to showcase a record number of city cars.
Key reasons for the boom include lower maintenance costs, ease of parking, and growing consumer preference for environment-friendly vehicles. With the expansion of Nepal’s EV ecosystem, major brands are now either focusing solely on compact EVs or integrating them as essential offerings in their broader product lines.

City car market outlook
According to LRR Motors Director Jeevan Jung Shahi, “A few years ago, there was limited interest in city cars and fewer sellers. But now, both the customer base and competing brands have grown rapidly.” As price-conscious and eco-aware consumers dominate the market, compact electric cars have emerged as the ideal choice.
With more than half a dozen new launches expected across the NADA and NAIMA expos, Nepal’s city EV market is poised for even more acceleration in the coming years — bringing with it better technology, higher competition, and increased accessibility.
