India approves additional 200 MW of power imports from Nepal

Kathmandu: The Government of India has approved the purchase of an additional 200 megawatts of electricity from Nepal, increasing the total export capacity to India to 1,010.9 MW.

This includes the previously approved 810.9 MW, with Nepal’s total approved electricity export — factoring in 40 MW to Bangladesh — now standing at 1,050.9 MW.

The latest approval, granted by the Indian government on 26 July 2025, is valid from 11 August to 31 October 2025. The supply will come from several hydropower projects in Nepal, including Likhu-2, Likhu Khola A, Lower Solu, Thulo Khola, Super Kabeli Khola A, and Super Kabeli Khola.

In fiscal year 2024/25, Nepal exported electricity worth Rs 17.47 billion. Authorities estimate that with this additional export approval — and the possibility of more to come — the country’s electricity export earnings could potentially double this year.

The agreement highlights deepening energy cooperation between Nepal and India, with Nepal’s hydropower sector playing an increasingly important role in the region’s renewable energy supply.
