Nepali students spend over Rs 138 billion on overseas education as travel expenses also surge


Kathmandu: Despite the presence of numerous universities and educational institutions within Nepal, a significant amount of money continues to flow out of the country for higher education abroad.

According to data released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) for the last fiscal year 2081/82 (mid-July 2024 – mid-July 2025), a total of Rs 138.48 billion was spent on education abroad. This marks a substantial increase from the Rs 125.13 billion spent in the previous year for the same purpose.

Under the services account, the central bank reported that travel expenses rose by 18.1 percent, reaching Rs 223.72 billion, up from Rs 189.43 billion in the previous year.

The net services income in FY 2024/25 recorded a deficit of Rs 90.94 billion, compared to a deficit of Rs 55.86 billion in the preceding year.

The import of travel services under the services account also increased by 7.7 percent, amounting to Rs 88.66 billion, up from Rs 82.33 billion in the prior year.
