Kathmandu: The government has decided to give Facebook and other social media platforms seven days to complete registration in Nepal.
The decision was taken during the Cabinet meeting held on August 25, with the aim of regulating the use of social media more strictly.
According to the Social Media Usage Regulation Directive 2023 and a ruling from the Supreme Court, the government has decided to make social media platforms accountable. For this, companies will be called to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within seven days.
If the platforms fail to register or remain out of contact within the given time frame, the government has decided to disable them from operating in Nepal. The Cabinet meeting also directed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to implement this decision.
