Kathmandu: The government is preparing to operate fair price shops across the country from September 15 targeting upcoming festivals.
The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies is set to operate fair price shops in 26 districts, including the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley. A ministerial-level departmental meeting held on August 24 decided to run the shops from September 15 until the upcoming Chhath festival.
The Food Management and Trading Company and Salt Trading Corporation will operate these shops.
Through fair price shops, the Food Management and Trading Company will provide a discount of Rs 5 per kilogram on all types of rice, wheat grain, sugar, lentils, and pulses; Rs 7 per kilogram on beaten rice, flour, refined flour, and wheat flour; and Rs 10 per kilogram on cumin, coriander, tea, live goats, sheep, and mountain goats.
Similarly, the government has arranged discounts of Rs 7 per litre on mustard oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil, and Rs 10 per kilogram on beans and buckwheat from Karnali, chino, kaguno, uwa, Jumli marsi rice, and basmati rice.
Likewise, Salt Trading Corporation will provide a discount of Rs 2 per kilogram on salt and sugar, and Rs 7 per kilogram on oil, beaten rice, flour, refined flour, and lentils.
Where will the fair price shops operate?
Salt Trading Corporation will run shops at Kalimati, Satungal, Jawalakhel, Koteshwor, Sifal, Kapan, Balaju, Sallaghari Bhaktapur, Kaushaltar, Kadaghari, Imadol, and Maharajgunj within the Kathmandu Valley, along with three mobile shops.
Outside the Valley, fair price shops will operate in Dhangadhi, Tikapur and Attariya of Kailali, Belauri of Kanchanpur, Dipayal of Doti, Surkhet, Birtamod of Jhapa, Biratnagar of Morang, Rajbiraj of Saptari, Lahan of Siraha, Janakpur of Dhanusha, Birgunj of Parsa, Hetauda of Makwanpur, Narayangadh of Chitwan, and Trishuli of Nuwakot.
Similarly, the government plans to operate shops in Pokhara of Kaski, Baglung, Bhairahawa of Rupandehi, Krishnanagar of Kapilvastu, Dang, and Dadeldhura.
Meanwhile, Food Management and Trading Company Limited will run fair price shops in 45 districts. These include Jhapa, Taplejung, Morang, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Lalitpur, Rasuwa, Kaski, Tanahun, Gorkha, Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, Rupandehi, Banke, Dang, Bardiya, Khotang, Siraha, Dhanusha, Parsa, Kathmandu, Dailekh, Dolpa, Gulmi, Rolpa, Rukum East, Rukum West, Kalikot, Humla, Kailali, and Dadeldhura.
Additionally, the company is preparing to operate shops in Bajura, Doti, Baitadi, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Jumla, Mugu, Bajhang, Kanchanpur, Achham, and Darchula.
