Kathmandu: The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has issued a public notice urging people not to fly kites, drones, or balloons in areas surrounding Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), warning that such activities pose a serious threat to aviation safety.
The authority has explicitly prohibited kite flying near the airport and within a five-kilometre radius, stating that any activity interfering with flight operations will be subject to strict legal action.
“Kites, drones, balloons, and laser lights can seriously endanger flight operations at Tribhuvan International Airport and nearby areas,” the CAAN notice stated. “All are requested not to engage in such activities. Anyone violating this order will face severe punishment under prevailing law.”
CAAN also noted that while drones and balloons can be electronically restricted near the airport, kites remain a major hazard. Even a minor incident involving a kite string could cause significant disruption during take-off or landing, the authority warned.
The advisory comes as Nepal enters the Dashain and Tihar festival season, when kite flying is a popular tradition. CAAN said it issued the directive to prevent potential accidents and ensure safe flights during the busy travel period.
