Curfew imposed in Kathmandu after Gen Z protests turn violent

Kathmandu: The District Administration Office of Kathmandu has imposed a curfew order Monday after protests led by Nepal’s Gen Z youth escalated into violent confrontations.

According to Chief District Officer Chhabilal Rijal, the curfew will be in effect from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm Monday.

The order was issued under Section 6 of the Local Administration Act, 1971, prohibiting movement, assemblies, rallies, demonstrations, gatherings, meetings, or encirclements within designated boundaries of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

The decision followed clashes in New Baneshwor, where demonstrators arriving from Maitighar and Tinkune broke through police barricades around the Federal Parliament building.

Some protesters reportedly entered the parliament compound and damaged its main gate. Police responded with tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds. With tensions escalating, the administration moved swiftly to declare the curfew.

The curfew has been enforced across the following areas of Baneshwor:

From Baneshwor Chowk westward to Everest Hotel and up to Bijulibazar Bridge.

From Baneshwor Chowk eastward through Minbhawan and Shantinagar to Tinkune Chowk.

From Baneshwor Chowk northward past Eyeplex Mall to Ratnarajya Secondary School.

From Baneshwor Chowk southward down to Shankhamul and across Shankhamul Bridge.

Authorities have warned that no movement or public gatherings will be permitted within these zones until the curfew order is lifted.
