Kathmandu: At least nine people have been confirmed dead amid escalating Gen Z-led protests in Kathmandu’s Baneshwar area, health authorities said on Monday.
By 3:30 p.m. local time, officials reported that six deaths occurred at Trauma Centre, while one fatality each was recorded at Civil Hospital, KMC Hospital, and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Dozens more remain critically injured, many suffering from gunshot wounds after police fired on demonstrators. Civil Hospital and Everest Hospital were reportedly overwhelmed with casualties, with ambulances arriving in waves to transport the wounded from protest sites.
The rising death toll comes as security forces intensify crackdowns on protests that began as peaceful demonstrations demanding accountability and good governance but spiralled into violent confrontations after some protesters stormed barricades around Parliament.
Authorities have imposed curfews in parts of Kathmandu and Pokhara, while hospitals brace for further casualties as demonstrations continue.
