Two killed in eastern Nepal as Gen-Z protests spread to Itahari

Itahari: The Gen-Z protests that have rocked Kathmandu spread to eastern Nepal on Monday, leaving two people dead in the city of Itahari, Sunsari district.

According to police, six protesters were shot during clashes with security forces after demonstrators set fire to the Itahari Sub-Metropolitan Office. Two of the injured later died while receiving treatment at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan.

Of the four others wounded, one remains in critical condition and is being treated at Birat Teaching Hospital.

In response to the violence, the Sunsari District Administration imposed a curfew across Itahari, banning gatherings and restricting movement.

The deaths in Itahari add to the rising national toll from the Gen-Z movement’s protests, which began over the government’s shutdown of social media platforms but have since grown into a broader youth-led uprising against corruption and political mismanagement.

At least 18 people have died so far while 256 are being treated. Hospital authorities have said that at least 20 injured people have sustained severe wounds.
