Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is preparing to tender his resignation, according to sources close to his office, as nationwide protests spiral out of control.
The unrest intensified early Tuesday after government force was blamed for the deaths of 19 people during Gen Z-led demonstrations on Monday.
The violence has triggered a massive backlash across the country.
Protesters set fire to the private residence of Prime Minister Oli in Balkot, as well as the home of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha and that of Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda.”
The central offices of both the Nepali Congress and Oli’s CPN-UML were also torched by demonstrators.
With the situation slipping beyond government control, sources claim that Prime Minister Oli has initiated discussions with his inner circle about resigning.
“The prime minister held talks with close confidants today regarding stepping down,” one source confirmed.
