Kathmandu: Discussions on the formation of an interim government are set to continue today after Thursday’s round of talks failed to reach a conclusion.
President Ram Chandra Paudel, in coordination with Chief of Army Staff Ashok Sigdel, held consultations on Thursday with former Chief Justice Sushila Karki and constitutional experts. However, the meeting ended without a resolution, prompting another round of discussions today.
There is consensus among stakeholders on appointing former Chief Justice Sushila Karki—nominated by the Gen-Z movement—as Prime Minister of the interim government. But disagreement persists over whether Parliament should be dissolved.
Advocate Om Prakash Aryal, who represents the Gen-Z–Balen alliance in the negotiations, said that while there has been positive progress, final agreement has not yet been reached. He confirmed that another meeting is scheduled for after 9 am today.
Talks are now centred on how to complete the constitutional process regarding both the interim government and the dissolution of Parliament.
Under the constitution, the Prime Minister must be a member of the House of Representatives. Since Sushila Karki is not a member of Parliament, President Paudel on Thursday consulted legal scholars on the constitutional path for appointing her to the role.
Constitutional experts Bipin Adhikari, Bhimarjun Acharya, Chandrakanta Gyawali, and others advised the President to seek solutions strictly within the constitutional framework. They recommended that President Paudel move forward by invoking the provision under Article 61(4) of the Constitution, which allows the removal of constitutional obstacles.
