Burnt Prime Minister’s Office to be preserved as a museum

Kathmandu: The government has decided not to demolish the Prime Minister’s Office building damaged during the Gen Z movement. Instead, it will be preserved in its burnt state and turned into a museum modeled after Dharahara, Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal has announced.

He said, “The Prime Minister’s Office was not completely burnt; only the front section was damaged. A portion of the burnt front will be preserved as a museum, similar to Dharahara.”

The building inside Singha Durbar was set on fire during the Gen Z protests. The government plans to retain the charred section as a symbolic reminder to prevent misconduct in the future.

Minister Khanal added that, just as in Rome, Nepal also aims to symbolically showcase burnt structures as historical markers.

Other buildings inside Singha Durbar will be repainted externally and gradually reconstructed. Authorities will assess the extent of the damage, determine usability, and begin temporary operations while reconstruction moves forward.
