Kathmandu: Newly appointed Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Mahabir Pun has announced that he will not reside in the ministerial quarter but instead live at the ministry itself.
Speaking to journalists after assuming office Monday, Minister Pun said he did not require a separate quarter and instructed that arrangements be made for him to sleep within the ministry premises.
“I don’t need a minister’s quarter. Just make a room inside the ministry. A bed, chair, and table will be enough. A kitchen is also needed — I’ll cook and eat myself,” he stated.
He also requested security personnel to stay at the ministry and clarified that he did not need extra security. Pun explained, “As for facilities, normally there is one police officer and one army personnel assigned. I told them—report to your commander. I’ll stay in the ministry. When I go outside, you don’t need to follow me around.”
He further announced that government vehicles would be used only for official purposes. He emphasized that he had been entrusted with ministerial responsibility for six months and committed to accomplishing as much as possible in that period.
Pun said he had not sought the ministerial position but had been compelled by circumstances.
Since he is responsible for both science and education, he said he would not make immediate decisions on which issues to prioritize.
He also said he would accept suggestions only from good and genuine people. Additionally, he urged youths not to merely follow others or act as someone’s “tail,” but instead to move forward using their own wisdom and independent thinking.
