Biratnagar: At least 37 people have been confirmed dead in Ilam alone due to the relentless rains, floods, and landslides that struck on Saturday and Sunday, up until Sunday afternoon.
Ilam’s Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal confirmed to Clickmandu that 37 deaths have been verified so far, with one person still missing.
According to her, the army’s helicopter has rescued two people so far, while five individuals from Sandakpur could not be evacuated due to bad weather. Due to the poor weather, the helicopter was unable to land in Sandakpur, preventing the rescue of the five injured people.
According to CDO Nepal, six people died in Sandakpur Rural Municipality, eight in Mai Jogmai Rural Municipality, three in Maansebung, eight in Deumai Municipality, six in Ward No. 6 of Ilam Municipality, five in Ward No. 1 of Suryodaya Municipality, and one person was buried and killed by a landslide in Phakfokthum Rural Municipality.
So far, one person has gone missing due to the landslides. According to Chief District Officer Nepal, due to geographical remoteness and adverse weather conditions, authorities have been unable to reach the incident sites, so the full details of the damage have not yet been obtained. According to her, landslides have damaged dozens of houses.
