Kathmandu: Nepal is currently exporting an average of 1,000 megawatts of electricity per day.
According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Manoj Silwal, this power is exported after meeting the country’s domestic consumption.
Since the beginning of the current fiscal year 2082/83 (mid-July 2025), Nepal has exported electricity worth approximately Rs 15 billion.
The electricity is being sold to India through competitive bidding in the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX)’s Day-Ahead and Real-Time markets, as well as through bilateral medium-term power purchase agreements with the states of Haryana and Bihar.
Additionally, 40 megawatts of electricity are being exported daily to Bangladesh using India’s transmission infrastructure.
Electricity trade with India is conducted in Indian Rupees (INR), while exports to Bangladesh are in U.S. dollars.
As a result, the NEA is earning both Indian Rupees and U.S. dollars from power exports. The Authority has received approval to export a total of 1,165 megawatts of electricity to India and Bangladesh.
