Kathmandu: Hyatt management has decided to reopen the five-star Taragaon Regency Hotels (Hyatt Regency Kathmandu) in the capital after reconstruction, which were shut down following the Gen-Z protest.
The hotel was severely damaged during the movement, and it has been stated that it will resume operations as soon as possible after rebuilding.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the hotel’s executive director Suresh Lal Shrestha, the hotel expressed gratitude for the assurances from Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Finance Minister Rameshwar Prasad Khanal that necessary support and assistance will be provided by the government regarding the damages at the hotel.
The statement mentioned that the damage assessment from the protest held on September 8 and 9 is underway, and after reconstruction, the hotel will operate with the firm commitment to further enhance Nepal’s prestige in the tourism sector.
“During the movement, the hotel’s guest rooms, offices, reception, lobby, restaurant, banquet hall, prayer hall, and overall hotel structure suffered significant damage due to vandalism, looting, and fire-related activities. Since then, the hotel has been completely closed. After a full assessment of the damages, the hotel expresses its commitment to upgrade and rebuild the hotel, reopening as soon as possible with expanded and excellent services.” The hotel stated it would take at least one year for the upgrade and reconstruction.
The hotel also pledged to contribute more to the country’s economic development by increasing government revenue sources and to operate with the firm determination to uphold Nepal’s prestige in the tourism sector as the country’s flagship hotel.
“The hotel has witnessed various political and social changes in Nepal over the past two and a half decades. During this period, we have faced extreme armed conflict, the peace process, constitution-making, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout these challenges, we have provided employment to thousands and made significant contributions to the country’s tourism and economy for years,” the hotel said.
Acknowledging its significant contribution to the economy through tourism, the hotel has been repeatedly honoured by the government. It has been recognized seven times as the highest taxpayer in the tourism sector and twice as the hotel that earned the most foreign currency in the tourism industry.
