Kathmandu: The “National Sovereignty, Nationality, Religion, Culture and Citizens’ Rescue Mega Campaign Nepal” – a protest movement led by controversial medical businessman Durga Prasai – has begun mailing threatening letters to major banks, financial institutions, and educational establishments demanding financial contributions.
The letters, signed by the campaign’s central finance coordinator Devi Prasad Sangraula, warn that if recipients do not voluntarily provide “moral, financial, and material support,” the campaign will not take responsibility for any vandalism, arson, or looting that may occur against their properties during the indefinite nationwide strike (bandh) the group has called starting 23 November 2025.
Bank and finance-company CEOs have gone into emergency meetings after receiving the letters.
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country’s central bank, issued a strong statement condemning the intimidation tactics. NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said, “No one has the right to spread terror by demanding donations or threatening to shut down banks. If such activities continue, we will immediately coordinate with the government and take appropriate action.”
Meanwhile, police have taken Durga Prasai into custody following a series of inflammatory public statements and the escalating threats from his campaign.
Prasai, who runs a chain of medical colleges and has been embroiled in multiple financial and legal controversies, has positioned his movement as a pro-monarchy, pro-Hindu nationalist crusade against the current federal republican system.
