Kathmandu: The Nepal government has decided to prohibit cash payments for any single transaction exceeding Rs 500,000 (approximately US$ 3,700), effective from 15 January 2026.
Under the new Cabinet decision, individuals and businesses will only be allowed to pay or receive up to Rs 500,000 in cash in a single transaction for goods, services, or any other deal. Any purchase, sale, or transfer valued at Rs 500,000 or more must go through a bank or authorized financial institution using digital banking channels (bank transfer, mobile banking, cheques, cards, etc.).
The rule is part of the government’s ongoing push to increase financial transparency, curb black money, reduce tax evasion, and bring more transactions into the formal banking system.
