Kathmandu: In an inspiring milestone for young writers in Nepal, 11-year-old Avik Gautam, a Grade 5 student of Nisarga Batika School, officially launched his debut novel The Wilds and Wonders of Venua Island Saturday.
The novel was launched amid a gathering of approximately 100 attendees, including family members, friends and their parents, teachers, senior journalists, established writers, and distinguished guests.
The event was chaired by Keshab Parajuli, Director of Bhundipuran Prakashan. The Chief Guest was Shree Om Shrestha ‘Rodan’, Chairperson of Shrasta Samaj. Special Guest and book commentator Pramod Pradhan, former Chairperson of Baal Sahitya Samaj, shared his critical reflections on the novel. Critic and journalist Bindesh Dahal offered a comprehensive commentary on the book.
Remarks were delivered by the Principal of Nisarga Batika School, Chhabiraman Silwal (Chairperson, Sunkoshi Banmaya Pratishthan), and child rights activist Krishna Subedi. The author’s parents, Rabindra Gautam and Sabina Thapa, as well as his grandfather Ram Kumar Thapa, were present during the unveiling ceremony.
Published by Bhundipuran Prakashan, the novel marks an extraordinary achievement for a young author who began writing the story at the age of nine. Avik completed the first draft in June 2025 after nearly two years of imagination, drafting, and refinement. The publication process took additional time, culminating in the formal release of the book this year.
The Wilds and Wonders of Venua Island is an adventure-driven narrative that follows a mysterious and imaginative journey sparked by an unexpected discovery. Through vivid storytelling and a sense of wonder, the novel explores themes of curiosity, courage, emotions, imagination, and the transformative power of adventure. The storyline reflects a creative maturity uncommon for his age, blending fantasy elements with emotional depth and a strong narrative arc.
Speaking at the launch event, Avik shared that writing the novel has been one of the most meaningful experiences of his young life. Although he aspires to become a cricketer in the future, he views writing as a lifelong passion and creative pursuit. He described storytelling as a way to turn constant ideas and imagination into something tangible for readers.

The launch event celebrated not only the publication of a book but also the importance of nurturing creativity and reading habits among children. Teachers and senior attendees commended Avik’s dedication, discipline, and originality, noting that such achievements demonstrate the potential of young minds when supported by families and schools.
The book is now available through Bhundipuran Prakashan, online platforms such as Daraz, and selected outlets.
This publication represents a significant encouragement for young readers and aspiring writers across Nepal, reinforcing the message that age is not a barrier to literary achievement.
