Kathmandu: Early results from Nepal’s 2026 House of Representatives election have begun to emerge, showing a strong initial lead for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
According to preliminary vote counts from constituencies where counting has started, RSP candidates are leading in a large majority of seats.
As of 7:30 a.m. Friday, election officials and chief returning officers reported that initial results had been released from 39 constituencies across the country following Thursday’s parliamentary vote. Among these, candidates from the Rastriya Swatantra Party are ahead in 33 constituencies, indicating a strong early performance.
Candidates from the Nepali Congress are leading in three constituencies, while the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) holds the lead in two. In much of the Kathmandu Valley, RSP candidates have established early advantages.
In Jhapa-5, a closely watched race, RSP senior leader Balen Shah has taken a commanding early lead over UML chairman and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli. Shah has secured 1,476 votes so far, compared with 384 votes for Oli.
Election officials said vote counting in many other constituencies has yet to begin, as ballot boxes are still being collected and all-party meetings are being held before the process starts. With counting ongoing, officials caution that the preliminary results could change as more votes are tallied.
