Biratnagar: Following the “Gen Z Uprising,” the results of the House of Representatives election held on February March 5 have signalled the rise of the Shram Sanskriti Party from Koshi Province.
In its first-ever electoral participation, the party registered victories in Sunsari-1, Bhojpur, and Khotang, sidelining major established parties in the race for the House of Representatives.
Three members of the Shram Sanskriti Party, including its chairman and former Mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, Harka Sampang, have secured their tickets to Parliament from the people. As of Sunday afternoon in Koshi Province, the Shram Sanskriti Party has reached a status equal to the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML), trailing only behind the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
Party Chairman Harka Sampang is confirmed to enter the Parliament building after defeating the RSP candidate in Sunsari constituency No. 1 by a heavy margin. Sampang secured 35,741 votes, while Goma Tamang of the RSP received 27,249 votes. In this constituency, Tikaram Limbu of the UML received 6,463 votes, and Sujendra Tamang of the Nepali Congress received only 3,970 votes.
The party also secured victories in Khotang and Bhojpur. In Khotang, Aaren Rai became a Member of Parliament by securing 16,612 votes, defeating Dev Bikram Rai of the UML, who received 12,714 votes. Birkaji Rai of the Congress secured 11,957 votes here.
Similarly, the Shram Sanskriti Party brought its total number of parliamentary seats to three by defeating former Provincial Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai in Bhojpur. The party’s Dhruva Raj Rai registered a win with 16,663 votes, while UML’s Sherdhan Rai was limited to 14,750 votes.
By winning in Sunsari-1, Bhojpur, and Khotang, the Shram Sanskriti Party has established a powerful presence across all 14 districts of the province, outperforming major parties like the Congress, UML, RPP, and the Maoists in terms of vote counts in nearly half a dozen constituencies.
Of the 28 constituencies in Koshi Province, final results for 24 had been made public by Sunday afternoon. Among these, RSP, Congress, UML, and Shram Sanskriti Party have each won 3 seats (totaling 15 out of the 24 declared), while parties like the Maoist Center and RPP have failed to open their accounts in the province so far. The RSP achieved a “clean sweep” in Jhapa, Morang, and Udayapur.
In addition to its three wins, the Shram Sanskriti Party came third in Jhapa-1 with 10,004 votes, where RSP stood first and Congress second. The party showed a strong presence in other Jhapa constituencies as well: Jhapa-2 (7,291 votes), Jhapa-3 (7,339 votes), Jhapa-4 (7,161 votes), and Jhapa-5 (9,233 votes).
Furthermore, in Morang-1, while the RSP registered a win, the Shram Sanskriti Party became the runner-up with 17,522 votes. In Morang-3, the party came third with 16,501 votes. In Sunsari-2, it stood third with 6,345 votes, with Congress in second place.
In Panchthar, while Narendra Kumar Kerung of the Congress was victorious, Hastaraj Sherma of the Shram Sanskriti Party became the runner-up with 14,734 votes, trailing by 2,499 votes. The party also secured 11,932 votes (third place) in Dhankuta and 5,209 votes in Taplejung. The party also marked its presence in Ilam, Okhaldhunga, Tehrathum, and Sankhuwasabha during this election.
RSP’s dominance in other districts
The RSP achieved a clean sweep in all five constituencies of Jhapa. The winners include Nisha Dangi (Jhapa-1), Indira Rana (Jhapa-2), Prakash Pathak (Jhapa-3), Shambhu Prasad Dhakal (Jhapa-4), and Balendra Shah (Jhapa-5).
Similarly, the RSP clean-swept all six constituencies in Morang. The winners are Yagyamani Neupane (Morang-1), Krishna Karki (Morang-2), Ganesh Karki (Morang-3), Santos Rajbanshi (Morang-4), Asha Jha (Morang-5), and Rubina Acharya (Morang-6). In Udayapur, RSP won both constituencies with Parashmani Gelal (Area 1) and Surya Bahadur Tamang (Area 2) being elected.
In Sunsari, RSP’s Ashok Kumar Chaudhary won in Area 3. While Harka Sampang won Sunsari-1, RSP candidates are leading by heavy margins in Constituencies 2 and 4.
In Taplejung, Kshitiz Thebe of the UML emerged victorious, defeating Gajendra Prasad Tumyang Limbu of the Congress. In Panchthar, Narendra Kumar Kerung of the Congress was elected, defeating his nearest rival, Hastaraj Sherma of the Shram Sanskriti Party.
In Ilam-2, Suhang Nembang of the UML was elected, defeating Bheshraj Acharya of the Congress. Meanwhile, Bishwamani Pokharel of the RSP was elected from Okhaldhunga, Rajendra Rai of the UML won in Dhankuta, Santosh Subba of the Congress was elected in Tehrathum, and Prakash Singh Karki of the Congress won in Solukhumbu.
