Damauli (Tanahu): Dr Swarnim Wagle is a well-known figure in Nepal’s public policy and economy. Economist, and policy and planning expert Dr Wagle has embarked on active politics for some years.
He secured victory for the second time from Tanahu constituency no 1 in the recent House of Representatives election. Dr Wagle secured 38,040 votes this time, while he had collected 34,911 votes in the by-election three years back.
Wagle was born in a village of Gorkha district. He was keenly interested in study since his childhood. He pursued his university study abroad and did PhD in economics.
In addition to his study of economics, Dr Wagle continued research on development economy, public policy and economic reform, earning international reputation. He has significant work experience in various international institutions after university study. Development, poverty alleviation and economic policy were his areas when he served in the UN agencies.
Following his return to the country, Dr Wagle worked as Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, contributing to Nepal’s perspective plan on development, economic reform and good governance.
As he realized the urgency of implementing policies and reform works through political correction, he began his political journey for leadership. Dr Wagle joined active politics by joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). His political entry has been observed as shift from ‘technical leadership to political leadership.’
Elected from constituency no 1 of Tahanu district, Dr Wagle has mentioned development, good governance, employment and economic reform as his major agenda. While wooing voters before election, he reminded new thoughts and result-oriented politics for meaningful change in the country.
Dr Wagle’s entry is presently known as ‘leadership with policy competence’ in Nepali politics. His experience and expertise in economy and development policy is expected to deliver well through his parliamentary practice.
