FNCCI leader pledges ban on political affiliation for office bearers

Kathmandu: Senior Vice President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Anjan Shrestha, has announced plans to amend the federation’s statute to bar its office bearers from being affiliated with any political party.

Speaking at a panel announcement event for his group ahead of the FNCCI’s upcoming 60th Annual General Meeting in Kathmandu, Shrestha argued that political alignment among business leaders has weakened the private sector and must be addressed institutionally.

He committed that under his leadership, the FNCCI would establish an effective mechanism to systematically gather and address grievances from entrepreneurs, ensuring their concerns are heard and resolved through coordination with the government. Shrestha emphasized a shift toward data-driven and research-based policymaking, saying the federation would identify industry problems through structured analysis and work collaboratively with authorities to deliver results. He also pledged to move beyond the traditional approach of merely lobbying the government for legal reforms, stating that the FNCCI would proactively introduce public interest bills in Parliament.

Highlighting resource constraints faced by district chambers and commodity associations, Shrestha said the federation would coordinate with local and provincial governments to address these gaps. He stressed that unity within the private sector is critical, noting that past divisions—often driven by political affiliations—have undermined collective strength. By institutionalizing a non-political stance within the FNCCI’s leadership, he believes the private sector can regain its influence and effectiveness.

According to the federation’s statute, Shrestha is set to automatically assume the presidency following the 60th Annual General Meeting, where his proposed reforms are expected to shape the organization’s future direction.
