Kathmandu: A biscuit produced by Asian Biscuit and Confectionery Pvt. Ltd., based in Duhabi, Sunsari, has led to regulatory action after a consumer complaint revealed the presence of hair inside the product. The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has fined the company Rs 200,000 following confirmation of the issue.
According to the department, the complaint was filed regarding its “Digestive Nuts” biscuit brand, prompting an investigation. A joint team from the department’s Biratnagar office and the Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection Office in Morang conducted an on-site inspection at the production facility.
During the inspection, samples of the biscuit in question were collected and sent for laboratory testing. The test results confirmed the complaint, leading authorities to take action under the Consumer Protection Act, 2018.
The department stated that the offence falls under Clause ‘Ng’ of Section 35 of the Act, and the fine was imposed in accordance with Section 39(1)(b). Senior Food Research Officer Dr Balakumari Sharma said the company has been instructed to deposit the fine into a government account within seven days and submit proof of payment.
The department also released images of the contaminated biscuits and warned that any industry found to be compromising consumer health will face strict legal consequences.
