Kathmandu: In a major push to modernize the agricultural sector and provide a safety net for rural producers, the Government of Nepal has announced plans to broaden the reach of crop and livestock insurance while transitioning the entire administrative framework to a digital platform.
This initiative was unveiled by President Ram Chandra Paudel on Monday during a joint session of the Federal Parliament as part of the government’s annual policy and programs for the upcoming 2026/27 fiscal year.
The new policy specifically focuses on protecting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers by simplifying the insurance process through technology. Under this program, every stage of the insurance lifecycle—including the issuance of policies, the payment of premiums, the distribution of government subsidies, and the settlement of insurance claims—will be fully integrated into a unified digital system.
By digitizing these procedures, the government aims to ensure that financial support reaches farmers more efficiently and transparently, significantly reducing the delays and bureaucratic hurdles traditionally faced by the farming community during times of loss.
