Kathmandu: Five climbers and mountain guides lost their lives during mountaineering expeditions in Nepal between May 2 and May 10, according to the Department of Tourism.
In a statement issued by the department, officials confirmed that the deaths occurred during separate climbing operations on Mount Everest and Mount Makalu.
Three Nepali mountain guides died while working on Everest expeditions, said Himal Gautam, director and information officer at the department.
Lakpa Dendi Sherpa of Solukhumbu died on May 2 near the Everest Base Camp. He was associated with the ITBP Women’s Everest Expedition through the expedition company “Seven Summit Treks.”
Similarly, Vijay Ghimire, also from Solukhumbu and climbing through “TAG Nepal Treks,” died on May 9 in the Khumbu Icefall. Phura Geljen Sherpa, who was part of an expedition organized by “Kaitu Expedition,” died a day later on May 10 at Camp III on Mount Everest.
Apart from Everest, two foreign climbers died while attempting to summit Mount Makalu.
David Rubinek of the Czech Republic died on May 3 at an altitude of around 7,300 meters on Makalu II, while American climber Johannes Shelley died on May 10 at approximately 7,200 meters on Makalu I, according to the Department of Tourism.
