Kathmandu: More than 270 climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on Wednesday during Nepal’s ongoing spring climbing season, marking one of the busiest single-day ascents in the mountain’s history.
The achievement is being hailed as a historic moment for Nepal’s mountain tourism industry, with so many successful summits in a single day considered unprecedented in the country’s mountaineering record.
In a statement, Rishiram Bhandari, general secretary of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal, described the feat as an extraordinary milestone and a proud moment for Nepal’s tourism and adventure sectors.
This year’s climbing season has also produced several new world records. Veteran climber Kami Rita Sherpa scaled Everest for the 32nd time, breaking his own previous world record for the most ascents of the world’s highest peak.
Meanwhile, Lhakpa Sherpa from Sankhuwasabha district made history by successfully summiting Everest for the 11th time, setting a new record in the women’s category.
More than 500 climbers obtained permits from the Nepali side for this year’s spring Everest expedition season, the highest number ever recorded.
The climbing season officially began after the Expedition Operators Association Nepal’s rope-fixing team opened the route to the summit on May 13, 2026. Since then, favourable weather conditions have allowed climbers to continue reaching the top in large numbers.
