Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has placed storage-type reservoir projects at the top of its development agenda to ensure long-term energy security and stability.
Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Waglé, while unveiling the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84, announced a significant policy shift that allows reservoir-based hydropower projects to issue up to 40 percent of their shares to the public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) within the very first year of their construction or operation.
This strategic decision aims to mobilize domestic capital rapidly and provide immediate financial liquidity to large-scale infrastructure ventures that are critical for meeting the nation’s peak energy demands during the dry winter season. By facilitating early market access for these high-priority projects, the government intends to attract robust investment into the energy sector and accelerate the completion of vital hydroelectric plants across the country.
