Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has officially announced a new policy to prioritize and incentivize the use of electric buses within the public transportation networks of Kathmandu and Pokhara.
This strategic move was revealed by Finance Minister Swarnim Waglé during the presentation of the national budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84. The policy reflects a significant shift toward sustainable transit, aiming to modernize the commuting experience while reducing the environmental impact of urban transportation in the country’s two most prominent valleys.
As part of this initiative, the government is set to launch the “Smart Urban Mobility” program specifically for the Kathmandu Valley. This comprehensive plan involves more than just the introduction of new vehicles; it encompasses the development of a robust infrastructure featuring a network of charging stations, advanced vehicle tracking systems, and the construction of smart bus parks. By integrating these technological components, the administration hopes to create a more efficient, reliable, and data-driven transit ecosystem in the capital city.
In a similar vein, a dedicated “E-mobility” service will be established in the Pokhara Valley to facilitate a clean energy transition. This program is designed to systematically replace traditional fuel-powered public buses with modern electric alternatives. By implementing these e-mobility solutions, the government intends to enhance the quality of public transport in Pokhara while ensuring that the city’s growth as a major tourism hub remains aligned with international environmental standards.
