Kathmandu: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has unveiled a national budget totalling Rs 2.124 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27
The expenditure plan allocates Rs 1.27 trillion to recurrent costs, Rs 431 billion to capital investment, and Rs 422 billion for financial management.
To fund this budget, the government projects revenue collection at Rs 1.404 trillion. The remaining deficit will be covered through Rs 61.74 billion in grants, Rs 247 billion in foreign loans, and Rs 410 billion in domestic borrowing.
In terms of sector-specific spending, physical and urban infrastructure received the highest priority with Rs 268 billion, followed by the education sector at Rs 218.30 billion.
Other key allocations include Rs 15 billion for the Health Insurance Board (a 50 percent increase from the previous year), Rs 12.31 billion for forest and climate initiatives, and Rs 4.03 billion for the nationwide promotion of sports.
Regarding health, Minister Wagle noted that because the Health Insurance Board’s annual spending exceeds Rs 26 billion, the program will undergo significant restructuring to ensure its long-term sustainability.
Finally, the government has set aside Rs 120 billion for social security. A major policy goal for this term includes a coordinated effort across all levels of government to eliminate the issue of street children, alongside plans to reform child correction homes and address social distortions.
