Kathmandu: A man has lost more than Rs 2.86 million from his bank account after downloading a mobile application called “NEPSE AI” from a Facebook advertisement, according to the Nepal Police Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
The victim, identified under the pseudonym “John Doe,” installed the app after seeing the ad on Facebook. Soon after installation, remote access to his phone was activated. His phone screen went blank, and within moments, Rs 2,861,000 was siphoned from his bank account.
Police investigations revealed that all data and apps on the victim’s phone were erased following the incident. The CIB warned that such fraudulent schemes are spreading through social media platforms, exploiting deceptive advertisements to lure victims into downloading malicious apps.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid downloading suspicious applications promoted via Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms, particularly those linked to the fraudulent “NEPSE AI” app, which has been used to gain unauthorized access to digital devices and steal funds.
