Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting for 6 pm on Monday, as violent Gen Z-led protests continue to grip the capital and controversy deepens over the government’s decision to shut down major social media platforms.
According to officials, the meeting will specifically address the nationwide shutdown of platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube, as well as the escalating unrest linked to the Gen Z Movement. The protests have already left at least six people dead and dozens injured, despite heavy police crackdowns and curfews in central Kathmandu.
Although authorities imposed a curfew in New Baneshwar, where clashes between demonstrators and police turned deadly, reports suggest that protests in the area have not fully subsided.
Earlier on Monday, Nepali Congress General Secretaries met with party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, urging him to press the government to reverse its decision on the social media ban. In response, Deuba reportedly said he would raise the issue with Prime Minister Oli during Cabinet discussions.
The Oli government faces mounting pressure both domestically and internationally over its handling of the protests, the rising death toll, and the digital blackout that critics say has silenced dissent and crippled businesses.
