Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned from office as nationwide protests, led by the Gen Z generation, spiral beyond government control.
The unrest intensified early Tuesday following Monday’s demonstrations, during which the government’s use of force resulted in the deaths of 19 people.
The violent crackdown triggered a massive wave of anger across the country.
Protesters torched Oli’s private residence in Balkot, as well as the home of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha and the residence of Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda.” Demonstrators also set fire to the central offices of both the Nepali Congress and the ruling CPN-UML.
With the situation slipping beyond the government’s grasp, Oli stepped down from his post on Tuesday.
