Cathay Pacific suspends Nepal flights for 15 days amid tourism downturn

Kathmandu: Hong Kong–based airline Cathay Pacific Airways has suspended its flights to Nepal.

The airline has notified ticketing agencies not to sell tickets and informed them of the suspension.

According to the notice, Cathay Pacific has halted Nepal flights for 15 days, from Monday, September 15 until September 29. Travel agencies believe the decision stems from a decline in tourist activity following the Gen Z protests in Nepal.

Although the airline had resumed operations with enthusiasm soon after flights reopened in the wake of the Gen Z movement, it has now halted its regular Nepal service altogether. Until now, Cathay Pacific had been operating one daily flight to Nepal.

While the suspension has been described as temporary, Yam Bahadur Khadka, Managing Director of Arolina Tours & Travel, told Clickmandu that it remains unclear what the situation will be after the 15-day period.

According to him, the suspension of UAE visit visas, Cathay Pacific’s flight cancellations, and the wave of hotel booking cancellations will further weaken Nepal’s tourism sector.
