Nepal Telecom’s mobile data disrupted for over 2 hours due to billing system failure

Kathmandu: Mobile data services of Nepal Telecom have remained disrupted for the past two and a half hours due to a problem in its billing system. The issue, which began around 8 am this morning, had still not been resolved by 10:30 am.

According to Nepal Telecom, efforts are underway to fix the technical problem. While mobile calls were briefly affected earlier in the morning, that issue was resolved promptly, but the mobile data service remains down.

Repeated glitches in the company’s billing system have caused frequent disruptions in mobile data services. Telecom officials stated that a technical team is currently working to restore the system as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the procurement process for a new billing system has faced repeated delays. Most recently, the date for opening the financial proposal submitted by Huawei Technologies—declared technically qualified by Nepal Telecom—was postponed on Wednesday, September 24. Nepal Telecom announced through a public notice that the proposal opening date had been deferred until further notice.

Earlier, on September 15, Nepal Telecom had planned to open the financial proposal after declaring Huawei as the only technically qualified bidder on September 1. However, the process was postponed at that time due to the Generation-Z protests.

Nepal Telecom had called for bids on March 18, 2025. Huawei Technologies and HLel Cloud submitted proposals, but only Huawei was considered technically qualified. Currently, the company’s billing system is operated by AsiaInfo. Since the existing system is outdated and prone to frequent breakdowns, Nepal Telecom has been attempting to award a new contract.
