Nepal Telecom restores mobile data service after 3-hour outage

Kathmandu: Nepal Telecom’s mobile data service, which had been disrupted for nearly three hours due to a billing system failure, has now been restored.

According to Telecom’s Assistant Spokesperson, Nabin Kumar Mishra, the service, which had stopped around 8 am Wednesday morning, was resumed after restoration efforts.

Telecom stated that while mobile calls were briefly affected in the morning, that issue was resolved immediately, but it took almost three hours to fix the data service problem.

Recurring problems in Nepal Telecom’s billing system have repeatedly caused mobile data disruptions, becoming a persistent challenge for the company.

Meanwhile, the procurement process for a new billing system has been repeatedly delayed. Most recently, the financial proposal opening date of Huawei Technologies—the only company deemed technically qualified—was postponed again on Wednesday, September 24. Nepal Telecom announced in a public notice that the date has been deferred until further notice.

On September 1, Telecom had declared Huawei the only technically qualified bidder and decided to open its financial proposal on September 15. However, that process was delayed due to the Generation-Z protests.

The bidding process, announced on 18 March 2025, had attracted proposals from Huawei Technologies and HLel Cloud. Among them, only Huawei was found technically eligible.

Currently, the billing system is operated by AsiaInfo. As the system has become outdated and prone to frequent breakdowns, Nepal Telecom has been trying to move forward with a new contract.
