Landslide toll in Ilam climbs to 28, over three dozen dead province-wide amid ongoing rains


Biratnagar: The number of people who have lost their lives due to landslides in Ilam has reached 28. According to preliminary police estimates, landslides alone have caused the deaths of more than three dozen people in Ilam.

According to the provincial police, more than a dozen and a half people are still missing in Ilam. Preliminary police estimates suggest that more than three dozen people have died there alone.

Similarly, provincial police statistics indicate that one person each has died after being swept away by rivers in Udayapur and Khotang.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the police have been unable to reach the relevant incident sites in Ilam, preventing the collection of actual data. According to SSP Deepak Pokhrel, spokesperson for the Provincial Police Office, a helicopter was requested for the rescue of landslide victims in Maansebung but could not land, causing difficulties.

According to him, reports have emerged of significant human losses in Ilam. However, due to geographical remoteness and adverse weather, the police have been unable to reach the incident sites, and thus the actual details of the damage have not yet been received.

In the landslide that occurred on Saturday night, six members of a single family lost their lives in Ward No. 6 Ghos of Ilam Municipality alone.

Similarly, police have reported two deaths in Ward No. 5 Dhuseni of Deumai Municipality, one in Dhare, one in Ward No. 1 Chhange of Sandakpur Rural Municipality, four in Ward No. 5 Pyang of Mai Jogmai Rural Municipality, three in Ward No. 1 Patigaun of Maansebung Rural Municipality, one in Ward No. 1 Ratamate of Phakfokthum Rural Municipality, and five in Ward No. 1 Manebhanjyang of Suryodaya Municipality.

A girl has gone missing in Ward No. 3 Sulubung of Sandakpur Rural Municipality. Similarly, two people have been seriously injured in Maansebung Rural Municipality.

According to the police, preliminary reports indicate that more than a dozen and a half people have gone missing due to landslides in various places in Ilam. Dozens of houses in Ilam have been damaged.
