Saptakoshi River water levels exceed danger mark, traffic fully halted on barrage bridge amid flood fears


Biratnagar: Considering the potential risks after the water flow in the Saptakoshi River rose above the danger level, traffic on the bridge has been completely closed.

Security agencies have urged the general public in that area to remain safe. According to the Chief District Officer of Saptari, Tuvraj Pokhrel, after measuring the river’s water flow at 431,525 cusecs at 9 am, all gates of the barrage were opened. According to the latest measurement, the water flow at the barrage has now reached 510,960 cusecs.

As the water flow continues to increase, traffic on the barrage bridge has also been fully prohibited, CDO Pokhrel informed.

As a result of this, with the possibility of flooding in the Koshi, Supaul district in Bihar, India, has also been maintaining high alertness since Saturday. A team from the Armed Police Force is conducting announcements via microphone in areas around the riverbank.

“The flow of the Koshi River has already exceeded the danger level, so please do not step out of your homes except for essential work,” the police are warning the public to stay alert.

Armed Police personnel are also urging that in case of any problem or discomfort, immediately inform the nearest security agency.
