Heavy rains inflict Rs 100 million damage on irrigation structures, hydropower projects nationwide

Kathmandu: Due to the relentless rains on Friday and Saturday, irrigation structures across the country have suffered damage worth approximately Rs 100 million.

Minister for Energy, Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development Kulman Ghising shared information during a press conference Sunday that the irrigation sector alone has incurred about Rs 100 million in damage.

According to him, two hydropower projects operated by the private sector have also been damaged due to floods and landslides. One of these projects has a capacity of 8 megawatts, while the other has a capacity of less than 10 megawatts.

Minister Ghising stated that further studies are underway to collect detailed information on the damage to the hydropower projects.

Ghising mentioned that vigilance from all sides has minimized human casualties. Noting that physical damage has occurred in various sectors due to floods and landslides following the rains, he assured that the government will prioritize reconstruction efforts.

“Due to the government’s vigilance, there have been no human casualties from the floods. In Ilam, 351 millimetres of rain fell, leading to extreme rainfall. This has resulted in human losses from landslides. Apart from that, no other damage has occurred,” Minister Ghising said.
