Stock market falls by double digits to close the week

Kathmandu: Nepal’s stock market ended the week in the red, with the benchmark NEPSE index posting a double-digit decline on Thursday. The index dropped 17.53 points to close at 2,714.05, reversing the modest gains seen in the previous session.

The fall came after a mixed run earlier in the week. On Wednesday, the market had edged up by just over 5 points, but that followed sharper declines of more than 42 points on Tuesday and about 3 points on Monday. Sunday had offered a brief rebound, with the index rising by over 57 points.

Trading activity remained strong. Turnover on Thursday reached roughly Rs 14.56 billion, higher than the previous session’s total of just above Rs 11.39 billion, indicating active investor participation despite the market slide.

Market breadth tilted heavily negative. Share prices of 170 listed companies fell during the session, while 85 advanced and five remained unchanged, underscoring broad-based selling pressure across the exchange.
