Kathmandu: Nepal Telecom has expanded its prepaid roaming service, making it available across 62 countries through agreements with 89 international service providers. The move significantly broadens connectivity options for Nepali travellers and expatriates, allowing them to stay connected more easily while abroad.
Since the start of the current fiscal year, the telecom operator has added new partnerships with service providers in countries such as Latvia, Slovenia, Turkey, Taiwan (ROC), Ghana, Romania, and Laos, along with additional operators in Pakistan, Belarus, and Sri Lanka. These additions build on an already extensive network of roaming destinations where the service has been in use for some time.
Previously, Nepal Telecom’s roaming service was already accessible in a wide range of countries, including Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Luxembourg, and many others across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The expansion now further strengthens its global coverage, adding more destinations across regions such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Users can access voice, data, and SMS services under the roaming facility, and the company has indicated that it plans to gradually extend the service to additional countries in the future. The roaming service has been particularly useful for Nepalis travelling or residing abroad, offering continuity in communication without the need to switch SIM cards.
For prepaid users, roaming is automatically activated in all supported countries except India. To enable roaming in India, users must dial 14157# from their mobile phones and select the roaming option from the menu. For postpaid users, a minimum balance of Rs 5,000 is required to activate the service, which can also be done by dialling the same code while still in Nepal.
If users travel abroad without activating roaming beforehand, they can request activation remotely via email. This requires filling out a form on Nepal Telecom’s official website and submitting it along with a copy of their citizenship certificate or passport. Once the request is verified by the company’s roaming support team, the service is activated in accordance with standard procedures, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity even after leaving the country.
