Ex-PM Oli and former Home Minister Lekhak arrested

Kathmandu: Nepal Police have taken KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the CPN-UML and former prime minister, and Ramesh Lekhak, a Nepali Congress leader and former home minister, into custody from their respective residences on Saturday.

Authorities began preparations late Friday night to detain Oli from his residence in Bhaktapur’s Gundu area. A team led by SSP Santosh Khadka from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office surrounded his house overnight.

As Oli was already asleep, the police detained him early in the morning after he woke up. He was transported in his private vehicle to the Police Academy in Maharajgunj.

According to police sources, the Home Ministry had issued a written arrest order the same night. Before this, a high-level meeting had been held at the residence of the Inspector General of Police, attended by Home Minister Sudan Gurung.

Similarly, Ramesh Lekhak was arrested at 5:40 am on Saturday at his residence in Katunje, Bhaktapur.

Legal action against Lekhak has been initiated based on the findings of a commission formed to investigate the significant human and material losses during the so-called “Gen Z movement.”

The commission has accused Lekhak of serious criminal negligence. Home Minister Sudan Gurung confirmed the arrest via his official Facebook page.

Authorities concluded that during his tenure as home minister, Lekhak failed to maintain law and order effectively and acted negligently. Acting on an urgent arrest warrant, a joint team from the Armed Police Force and the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office took him into custody.

Both leaders are currently under police supervision. Officials say formal legal proceedings and further investigation will begin on Sunday.
