Kathmandu: The government has appointed Kiran Pandit as Deputy Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank following a Cabinet decision made on Tuesday. Although two deputy governor positions were vacant, the Cabinet chose to fill only one for now.
Pandit, who joined the central bank in 2005, is regarded as a capable and experienced official. He is currently serving as Executive Director of the Foreign Exchange Management Department at the central bank.
The vacancies arose after former deputy governors Dr Neelam Dhungana Timsina and Bam Bahadur Mishra completed their five-year terms on Falgun 25 and stepped down. Out of the two open positions, the government has now appointed Pandit to one.
The timing of the appointment is seen as significant, as Governor Dr Bishwanath Paudel is scheduled to attend an upcoming meeting of the International Monetary Fund later this week. With no deputy governor in place to assume acting responsibilities during his absence, the government moved to appoint Pandit to ensure continuity in leadership.
