Kathmandu: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has stepped down from his position, citing moral accountability following public scrutiny over his alleged involvement in share-related dealings with businessmen Deepak Bhatta and Sulabh Agrawal. He said he chose to resign to uphold integrity and public trust as questions surrounding the matter intensified.
In a statement released on social media on Wednesday, Gurung said he had carried out his responsibilities with honesty since assuming office in late March 2026, but acknowledged the growing criticism in recent days. “For me, ethics outweigh position, and there is no greater force than public trust,” he stated.
He emphasized that with rising public demand for good governance, transparency, and accountability, remaining in office could create the perception of a conflict of interest. To avoid that, he said, stepping down was the most appropriate course of action. Gurung also called for a fair and impartial investigation into the matter.
Referring to the recent youth-led “Gen Z movement,” he noted that it has sent a strong message about the need for cleaner public life and accountable leadership. “If we truly seek change, we must all stand on the path of truth, integrity, and self-reflection,” he said.
Gurung concluded by stressing the importance of embedding transparency and ethical conduct more deeply within society.
