Finance Minister announces “Matribhumi Fund” to fund strategic fuel reserves and AI infrastructure

Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has announced the establishment of the “Matribhumi Fund” (Motherland Fund) aimed at financing critical strategic projects, including the expansion of national fuel storage and the development of high-tech infrastructure.

The fund is specifically designed to ensure the country maintains a fuel reserve sufficient for at least three months and to support the establishment of AI factories, signalling a major push toward energy security and technological modernization.

Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Waglé unveiled this initiative on Friday while presenting the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 during a joint session of the Federal Parliament.

He emphasized that the government will utilize this fund to invest in long-term strategic assets that are vital for national resilience, ensuring that Nepal is better equipped to handle global supply chain disruptions while simultaneously positioning the country to capitalize on the emerging artificial intelligence sector.
