Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has appointed Ramesh Kumar Dhital, a distinguished Senior Chartered Accountant from Sindhupalchok, as the new Chairman of the Accounting Standards Board (ASB).
The decision, formalized by a Cabinet meeting in accordance with the Nepal Chartered Accountants Act of 1996, aims to modernize, regulate, and bring greater transparency to the nation’s accounting and financial reporting systems. This strategic appointment is expected to play a critical role in aligning Nepal’s financial oversight with global standards.
Mr. Dhital brings more than 20 years of intensive experience in auditing, financial consultancy, risk management, and the implementation of both National and International Financial Reporting Standards (NFRS/IFRS). According to sources at the Ministry of Finance, he has been a leading figure in the adoption of modern accounting frameworks within banks and financial institutions, while also significantly contributing to the specialization of information technology auditing in Nepal. His professional journey began at Ernst & Young in Mumbai, one of the world’s “Big Four” global consultancy firms.
Throughout his career, Mr Dhital has led audit and consultancy engagements for Nepal’s most prominent public and private organizations, including the Nepal Rastra Bank, Nepal Electricity Authority, Nepal Airlines, and the Nepal Insurance Authority. His expertise has also been utilized internationally through various roles and responsibilities in projects funded by the Asian Development Bank. His deep involvement in the sector is further evidenced by his past leadership as Vice President and General Secretary of the Association of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ACAN).
Beyond his consultancy work, Mr Dhital has been a technical mainstay for the country’s regulatory bodies, previously serving as an advisor to both the Accounting and Auditing Standards Boards. He currently serves on the examination committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) and has contributed immensely to developing educational materials and serving as a faculty member for various universities and training centres.
His credentials are exceptionally high, holding Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) designations from both Nepal and India, an MBA from Purbanchal University, CISA certification from ISACA in the US, and a Diploma in International Financial Reporting from ACCA in the UK.
The Ministry of Finance believes that Mr Dhital’s technical expertise and leadership will propel the board to new heights, particularly in integrating international best practices into the domestic financial system. Amrit Lamsal, spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance, stated that the government selected Dhital based on his proven proficiency and capacity, viewing him as the most qualified candidate to steer the board’s mission of ensuring financial transparency and robust reporting standards across the country.
